REVIEW - BEFORE AND AFTER

4.5 stars

First off, this book is the non-fiction followup to the previous fictional work Before We Were Yours by Lisa Wingate. This book that I am reviewing Before We Were Yours, is about Georgia Tann, the evil director of a Memphis adoption agency that personally profited from selling babies to well-to-do families. The children up for adoption were kidnapped, stolen, and taken from their parents by horrific means in order to sell them for profit.

I strongly suggest reading Before We Were Yours before reading Before and After to have a basic understanding of what happened in a fictionalized setting before reading the true stories of the adopted children, adopted/birth parents, and adopted/birth families.

I went through so many emotions reading this book - anger, disbelief, happiness, relief, joy, and all of the other emotion spectrum. This book takes you on a roller-coaster ride that totally pays off. This book is a quick and easy read - I read in a little over a day.

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this book!

REVIEW - OLIVE AGAIN (OLIVE KITTERIDGE, #2)

4.5 stars

Please read Olive Kitteridge (Olive Kitteridge, #1) before this book as it will help in understanding some of the same characters and the flow of this book. It definitely can be read as a book, but I think that it would be much more enjoyable to read them together.

I did read Olive Kitteridge (Olive Kitteridge, #1) some time ago, but the main character, Olive Kitteridge, was like an old friend. Her character made me laugh out loud many times - she is a HOOT!! She was so deep and so real that I would want to have a glass of wine with her while admiring the Maine coast which is breathtakingly beautiful!!

Also, the character development is just so well done. I feel like I could go to Crosby, Maine, where the book is set and recognize the many characters as they walked by me in the street The characters are just like anyone that you would recognize in your neighborhood or town. These are the regular people with real stories that are so very interesting!

Finally, the author, Elizabeth Strout, has a gorgeous and lovely way with words. Her writing is so rich and luscious. I just love reading her books and I have read several!!

HIGHLY RECOMMEND!! But read, Olive Kitteridge (Olive Kitteridge, #1) to get the full character development!!

REVIEW - CILKA'S JOURNEY (The Tattooist of Auschwitz #2) by Heather Morris

4.0 stars

Please read The Tattooist of Auschwitz (#1) before this book as it will help in understanding the flow of this book. It can technically stand-alone, but I think that it would be more enjoyable to read them in tandem.

I really liked the Silka and her fellow prisoners at the Russian Gulag in Siberia. I had NO idea that prisoners were released from concentration camps almost directly to the gulags. The crimes also seemed ridiculous and just created for prisoner labor. The novel was very good as it had interesting character development and a strong, but horrifying storyline. I really liked the characters and wanted to know more. Hopefully, Heather Morris will write more books, PLEASE!

Again, I am reading another WWII book which seems to be my favorite time period lately!! However, this is a powerful and well-written book - DEFINITE RECOMMEND!!!

REVIEW - A FIRE SPARKLING by Julianne MacLean

4.5 stars

For some reason, I am TOTALLY drawn to books about WWII. As a rule, they are usually well written, researched completely, and have a beautiful storyline. This book was NO exception to the rule!!

I loved this book from the moment that I read the first page. The characters were so real and developed that I was into the book and had great difficulty putting it down. So much so that I tried to finish it before bed last night and couldn't keep my eyes open - it is THAT kind of book!!

Thank you Julianne MacLean for writing such a lovely book that I will remember forever!!

HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

Happy reading,

P.S. I read this book BEFORE starting Books by Dorothea so there is no introductory post about A Fire Sparkling.
